Buda Castle – Úri street 72
permission plan
2015
Budapest
In the Middle Ages, the house at 72 Úri street was the site of the parish building of the Church of Mary Magdalene. According to the Zaiger census of 1696, originally, there were two houses on the site. The remaining part of the northern house is the present building. The first well-documented reconstruction of the building occurred between 1939 and 1941 when an extensive basement system was secretly built. During the Second World War, the building suffered extensive damage. Recently, after ten years of abandonment, it was purchased by the Pallas Athéne Foundation at the end of 2014.
The Földes office was involved as a designer in the preparation of the permit design for this project. The final project was designed by GINKGO-Zöld Architects and Schüller & Partners Architects in 2021. The aim was to create a building worthy of the Foundation’s objectives and to support domestic developments, innovations, and artistic creations during the design process. It was also essential to open as much of the building as possible to the public.
On the ground floor is a bookshop, an exhibition space, and a catering unit, among other things. They form an area accessible to all visitors. On the first floor are offices for researchers, workstations for the Foundation, and multifunctional auditoriums. The workstations are flexible in terms of layout. The new open space of the attic houses the selected collection of the Hungarian Geographical Society and the library. A glass roof was installed over the walkway around the courtyard, thus connecting the library to the courtyard.
The underground area of over 1850 m2 has a public function utilizing a new circulation system. Among these is the collection of the Hungarian Geographical Society, housed in the Great Hall, which reopens the once-imposing space to visitors.
