reconstruction, interior design
Eger
2015

The design of the current intervention was influenced by the history of the building. The majority of the building elements can be traced back to one specific architectural style. The visitor center is the result of the reconstruction of the historic building formed by Jakab Fellner.

Despite the distortions caused by the foundation, the building’s structures are typically in good condition. For instance, the load-bearing walls are still standing today. In the case of the partition walls, only the removal of the partitions after the Baroque period brought about changes. Where the condition of the wood allowed, the original timber ceilings were preserved. In many cases, direct preservation is possible, as original 18th-century openings were kept intact. The restoration of the chapel to its original form was of utmost priority during the development of the visitor center.

The themes of the exhibition are the building itself and the history of the church. The functional arrangement of the exhibition is adjusted to the building’s features and the hierarchy of spaces. The narrow, medieval ground-floor spaces house the museum’s service and auxiliary spaces. On the first floor, the courtyard is the treasury, while the rear rooms house themed permanent exhibitions. The majority of the second floor is occupied by the History of Interior Design exhibition, at which’s end, we can have an insight into the chapel. The visit ends with the temporary exhibition.

The three distinctly different parts of the gardens are connected to the renewed central wing. A representative ornamental garden in the east welcomes visitors, bordered by the three wings of the palace. A breakthrough in the life of the archdiocese is the opening of the ornamental garden to the pedestrian street, thus providing the city with a public park. Visitors will be able to get a deeper insight into the daily life of the Archdiocese.

The café is connected to a more intimate, shaded café terrace. Meanwhile, the quadrangle forms an enclosed space for contemplation.

A tour of the visitor center faithfully evokes the Christian spirit that has been present in Eger for a thousand years.

restoration, interior
Egervár
2013

The Földes office was commissioned to design the castle’s interior and the exhibition’s installation.

During the design process, it was of utmost importance to revive the Renaissance parts of the building in the contemporary Baroque and the newer building fabric. The Renaissance components are celebrated either with a thin veneer following the masonry surfaces in a membranous manner or by applying a bare wall surface. At the same time, several elements introduced during the earlier (1960s) renovation have been retained. Puritan sobriety was our guiding principle in the preservation of some reinforced concrete slabs.

The interior reconstruction has kept the materials of the spaces simplified but authentic: whitewashed walls, hand-made red ceramic flooring reconstructions in the corridors, and whitewashed vaulted, conventional, and beamed ceilings. The inspiring masses and materials, together with the historical background of the castle, justified the interior design not to blur the differences and not to try to create a new, strong character; but to create a system that adapts to the multi-layered visual environment, yet synthesizes it.

In the mass forms of the fortress, we found a formal inspiration that could bring together existing elements as an old-new authentic layer. With this in mind, we muted the visual presence of the new furniture and spatial elements with the natural, bleached colors of the materials, the use of materials reminiscent of traditional materials, and the ‘detail-free’ but finely proportioned masses. In addition, the shapes of the furniture to be incorporated are reminiscent of carpentry.

The furniture, in contrast, forms a subtle architecture with delicately distorted, truncated-globe shapes and traditional raw material colors forming abstract blocks and frames. The furniture, affiliated with the new function of the reception area, is temporary and dismantled, thus helping to assert the space, evoking its original sacral service.

In order to create quality lighting, a state-of-the-art exhibition lighting system is used, allowing the sophisticated use of differentiated direct and indirect lights. It reflects throughout the building as a suspended abstract translucent system – the exception being the historically reconstructed interiors, where lighting fixture reconstructions were made to match the original period.

The evocation of historical figures and the vivid colors were brought back into the modest but all the more striking spaces by the large-scale reproductions of the lords and ladies of the castle, hung and mounted in front of the walls.

The task is to fill the buildings belonging to the church of Ják with new functions, to redefine the walking routes. One of the most famous and spectacular elements of the church is the gate, several copies of which have been made to preserve its original condition. Exhibition of these plaster copies and other remaining stone building ornaments, sculptures, window, cornice and column fragments will also be solved in a new exhibition space. There is also a restaurant in the area, which sometimes hosts weddings and various events. A key aspect is the harmonization of the different use of space by locals and visitors.

reconstruction, plan
2021
Budapest

The monumental building, designed by Béla Málnai for Dr. István Perényi, the director of the mines, and his family, is located in one of the most significant World Heritage sites of Budapest.

The neo-Baroque building was restored to its present interior condition 20 years ago and has not undergone any major renovation since. In its current state, the institutions can no longer operate the building in a way that meets the necessities of today’s world. The Földes office was commissioned to design a solution for this problem.

The design objective was to preserve the architectural values of the villa, but in a way that would meet the new functional needs and today’s thermal and energy requirements. At the same time, we sought to minimize the structural intervention in this prominent historic building. The interior spaces are designed to restore the original structures and satisfy the needs of the institute while welcoming guests in the 21st century.

Aesthetically, we have sought to balance the architecture, which in places has become overly dominant, with restrained use of color.

plan
Mikosszéplak, Mikosdpuszta
2008

Completed in the second half of the 19th century, the romantic-style castle has deteriorated in recent decades. The new owner aims to create a 60-room castle hotel with a wellness function, conference room, and chapel. As the net floor area of the castle is about 2,700 m2 and the program is about 6,200 m2, the extension of the building became necessary.

During the design phase, it was of utmost importance that the castle is restored to its original appearance and that the new features follow the original as closely as possible. To keep the new wings neutral, they were not merged into the mass of the castle.

The original exterior of the castle was fully reproduced, including the restoration of the destroyed conical roof of the stair tower and the glasshouse in a new, modern form. The façade has been restored to its original subtle grey tones with traditional plasterwork.

The ground floor features have mostly retained their original function. Meanwhile, the glass-roofed palm house is equipped with a dining area, staircase, bar, and rich greenery. Hotel rooms have also been added to the original utility rooms, relieving the new wings. In the attic, penthouse-style hotel rooms were planned for similar purposes.

The wellness wing hides below ground level, with a green roof. This wing connects to the basement of the castle via a tunnel. The large glass surfaces of the two facades of the wellness wing connect the interior wellness space with the outdoor sun terrace and the adjoining swimming pool.

The new hotel wing stands on the existing retaining wall system behind the castle. As of this wing, a steel-and-glass bridge with a cantilevered span connects to the main castle. Thanks to the design of the new buildings, guests arriving at the site will only see the mass of the renovated castle on the garden path leading up to the castle, and will only discover the two new wings later.
